by Emily Leickly, GEU Member Spring is off to an exciting start for the Graduate Employees Union at Portland State University. Ratification of GEU’s first contract was completed with a signature from PSU President Rahmat Shoureshi on March 28. GEU is now preparing to elect its first Executive Board. Nominations for GEU officer positions (President, Chief Steward, Grievance Officer, Treasurer, and VPs of Bargaining, Communications, Equity & Inclusion, Social Engagement, Operations, and Politics) opened at the start of spring quarter on April 3rd. We recently released our mission statement poster—where more than 1,000 of our colleagues publicly declared their commitment to building our union and a better OSU. We are now collecting signatures on union authorization cards to demonstrate majority support for our union and finally gain legal recognition. We gain momentum each day, as we talk with colleagues in their offices, labs, homes, research centers, and extension offices across the state. We are also beginning to look forward to our work after recognition. Members of our sister unions have visited for Q&A sessions with UAOSU activists to shed light on best practices…
