by Jiries Meehan-Atrash, Communications Committee, GEU Like a newborn foal, the Graduate Employees Union at Portland State University has landed on its feet bucking, negotiating its first contract with no hesitation. During the past year GEU has dedicated its efforts towards the non-economic issues facing grad employees here, such as appointment notifications, workload, and tuition remission. In the coming year GEU will take its first bite into the economic issues regarding minimum stipends, cost of living adjustments and healthcare. We have had a busy few months of learning, organizing, and socializing together with our colleagues. In July, activists attended the AAUP Summer Institute, where we were able to connect with faculty unionists from across the country. The Summer Institute offered a number of sessions focused on organizing and the important work faculty unions do to improve higher education. We also hosted events that brought together OSU faculty from across both the state and the wide range of disciplines in which we work, teach, and study.
